Who We Are

Aroma of Christ is a ministry of Calvary Chapel Eastside in Bellevue, Washington. www.calvarychapeleastside.com

Meet The Director

While attending Washington State University in 1978, Janine Ridings made a life changing commitment to Jesus Christ.  Shortly thereafter, she felt led to attend Northwest University in Kirkland, Washington, which was founded by her grandfather, Henry Ness. While attending there, she had a wonderful opportunity to study God’s Word. In 1982, she graduated with a B.A. in Biblical Literature and a minor in counseling. Five years later she married Dean Ridings. They currently have two adult children, Brittany and Brian.

Over the years, Janine has served in various capacities within the body of Christ. Prior to becoming ill she enjoyed speaking at women’s events and retreats. She is a published author of a wide variety of articles in numerous international publications including Hopekeepers Magazine and Calvary Chapel Magazine. Her most recent work is a book entitled Comfort in the Storm: Devotions for the Chemically Sensitive.

How We Began

After being chemically injured on an airline in 1998, my life came to an abrupt halt due to severe health problems. I became a near shut-in, as I was no longer able to participate freely in society as I had in the past. Since I was housebound much of the time, I started ministering in any way I could from my home. Initially I started writing newsletters to encourage others with MCS, mailing them out to friends. In addition, I led an Internet prayer chain for my local church. This sparked the idea of starting a prayer chain on the Internet whose purpose would be to pray for the needs of those with MCS. After awhile, people on the prayer chain expressed a desire to be encouraged from God’s Word, so I started writing devotionals geared toward the chemically sensitive. Eventually I compliled the devotionals into a book entitled, Comfort in the Storm: Devotions for the Chemically Sensitive.

In 2004, Calvary Chapel Eastside welcomed Aroma of Christ to become part of their ministry team.

There are many people around the country who cannot participate in a traditional church setting due to the limitations of MCS. One primary goal of Aroma of Christ is to help those who are on the fringes get connected to other believers. People who would like to serve the body of Christ through prayer can become a part of the Aroma of Christ Prayer and Encouragement Group. In doing so, they have a ministry they can participate in right from their own home. Even though they cannot attend a local church, they are still a vital part of the body of Christ and can stay connected to other believers in this way.

I look forward to all God has ahead for Aroma of Christ in the coming years. I pray that the Aroma of Christ will encourage and bless your life!

Meet Our Advisory Board

“Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisors they succeed” (Proverbs 15:22).

We are pleased to introduce our Advisory Board Members. It is an honor to have each of them on our board:

Robert Case: Senior Pastor/Calvary Chapel Eastside

Robert Case graduated from the University of Washington in 1976 with a B.A. in Fine Art. He performed in nightclubs throughout the western United States and Canada until giving his life to the Lord in 1977. In1980, he heeded the call to full-time ministry, and for the next ten years traveled throughout the U.S., Europe, and Asia with the Robert Case Band singing and preaching the gospel of Jesus Christ. During that time they produced praise/worship tapes in English, French, Spanish, Japanese, and Russian.

In 1990 he joined the pastoral staff of Calvary Fellowship Seattle where he served for seven years overseeing such ministries as the School of Discipleship, Worship, Missions, and Media. On December 1, 1996 he joyfully assumed the pastorate at Calvary Chapel Eastside in Bellevue, Washington.

Merlyn Linden: Associate Pastor/Calvary Chapel Eastside

Merlyn Linden has served at Calvary Chapel Eastside as an associate pastor since 1999. He oversees numerous ministries including Missions, Youth Ministry, and Men’s Ministry. Merlyn has a real heart for Missions and has ventured out on eight mission trips over the years to places such as Ecuador, Belize, Germany, and Mexico.

Prior to coming to Calvary Chapel Eastside, Merlyn served as an elder at Issaquah Nazarene Church for five years.

Philip D. Ranheim, M.D.

Philip Ranheim, M.D., received a B.A. in Sociology from Pacific Lutheran University, and later he received his medical degree from the University of Washington. He worked as a family physician for 18 years before changing the focus of his practice to allergies and environmentally related illnesses.

Dr. Ranheim became interested in Environmental Medicine through first-hand experience with illness. After progressively worsening migraines, dizziness, kidney stones, fatigue, and recurrent sinus infections (that just wouldn’t get better in spite of the usual treatment), he was referred to a physician who specialized in “Environmental Medicine.” With optimal nutrition, fine-tuned allergy desensitization, and environmental controls, he was able to regain health, feel a lot better, and embark on a new career in a growing field. He now devotes all his time to this specialty.

His professional associations include being a past president of the American Academy of Environmental Medicine and a fellow of the American Academy of Family Practice. Additionally, he is a member of the Christian Medical and Dental Association, the Association of American Physicians and Surgeons, and the American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine.

Dr. Ranheim is a minister of music and an elder at Chapel Hill Presbyterian Church. He is bilingual in Spanish and English. His Web site can be found at: www.drpdranheim.com.

(1985-present) He is a former president of the Seattle/King County Chapter of the PDCA (Painting and Decorating Contractors of America) and is Member Services Committee Chairman for the Washington State Council.
